I've been where you are.

Parenting ADHD kids is not what I expected from motherhood. Neurodiverse kids think, feel, act and respond differently - they have a whole different operating system and way of being. Mainstream parenting just doesn't work for them. But no one told me that....

For years, I tried to make it work. It was a daily battle to do basic tasks. The same battles, every day. I tried all the standard techniques - encouragement, making it a fun game, using a reward chart, even apps. But nothing was effective! Or it would help for a short time (ND brains love novelty!) but suddenly fail. It wasn't enough, and nothing was sustainable.

My kids didn't respond to fun incentives, or negative consequences, or an authorative tone. They simply did not do what I needed them to do! If they didn't want* to, it wasn't happening. And yet, it was my job to make sure they look after themselves. This had me feeling lost as a parent. I was doing everything I could on my side of things...but my kids weren't responding to it. (*Note: I use the term want loosley here - the program covers the underlying mechanisms and what is actually happening in these situations.)

Life was chaotic. I was wasting SO much time on basic tasks, struggling to get my kids out the door - or if we opted to stay home, they would be bouncing off the walls. They needed engagement, but JUST the right amount of it, otherwise it would be overwhelming. 

They had big emotions and meltdowns. Which was unpleasant for them, too! Sometimes meltdowns would happen in public, which would be embarassing. My kids can also be very direct and sound demanding, which people sometimes interpretted as rude.

By the time they were finally asleep, my tank was completely empty. The days felt so long, and were practically, emotionally, and often physically exhausting. I had no time or energy left for myself. And I had to do it all over again the next day!

I felt overwhelmed on the daily. I wondered if I just needed to accept my fate. Would it always be this much effort and struggle? But I'm an optimistic person, with a strong interest in psychology and a passion for personal development. I knew there must be something, some key that would transform things for us.

Two things changed everything:

1. I became a scientist.
Every day, I observed, reflected, experimented. Parenting my kids was both a science and an art, and I was trying different ratios and potions, refining the process for years to work it out.

Eventually I had a pretty good handle on things... We could avoid the big meltdowns, follow a rough daily routine. But everything took a long time, and was convoluted. We had to do things a certain way. And my kids still didn't co-operate easily. It was like they could turn into a brick wall - they just would not move or do the thing. At times, we could get into this snowball, where anything I did actually made it worse and take longer to get things done.

2. I found the keys to ADHD

I had all the strategies, observations, and an understanding of behavioural psychology... but I was missing one cog in the machine. One thing that would bring it all together. When I found the missing piece, everything clicked into place. I learned the key principles about the neuroscience of ADHD, which meant that suddenly, I knew why certain things worked and others didn't. With an awareness of the underlying functions, I could confirm or tweak all my theories, and refine and perfect my method.

Now, our days run smoothly. We co-operate together and operate as a cohesive family unit. I know how to interact with my kids, and how to work their operating systems.
